Spencer Consort Is Baroque Music on Period Instruments

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Spencer Consort will perform on 17th- and 18th-century period instruments at noon Monday, Oct. 23, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the free Ruel Joyce Recital Series featuring Kansas City classical artists.
Musicians include Elizabeth Egbert Berghout, associate professor of organ and carillonneur at the University of Kansas, who has a doctorate of musical arts from KU; John Boulton, professor emeritus of flute, KU, and a member of the Topeka Symphony; Philip Kates, professor emeritus of oboe, chamber music and conducting, Humboldt State University, Calif.; Joy Laird, baroque flutist and recorder player who has a private teaching studio in Lawrence and is a member of the Lawrence City Band and Lawrence Chamber Orchestra; and Paul Laird, professor of musicology and director of the Instrumental Collegium Musicum, KU.
Ruel Joyce Recitals will continue at noon Monday in the Recital Hall.

The series is named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians federation from 1977 until his death in 1989.
