Two Jazz Guitars Open Free Series

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Cold War is over. Now it’s hot music when Victor Protodyakonov, Fulbright scholar and jazz guitarist from Russia, and local jazz guitarist Danny Embrey play as the lead-off group for the free fall Jazz Series at noon Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.
Protodyakonov has been in residence at JCCC as part of a Fulbright Visiting Scholar Grant. He is a research fellow at the Center for American Studies at Udmurt State University, Izhevsk, Russia, and the coordinator of the Center’s program “American Jazz in World Cultural Context.”
In addition to these responsibilities, Protodyakonov plays professionally and teaches jazz guitar. He has published three books on jazz music and guitar techniques and worked in close cooperation with Udmurt State Philharmonic Society for 10 years, taking an active part in many jazz music projects. He initiated and organized a series of educational jazz concerts and lectures for secondary and high school students.
Embrey, too, is a world-class jazz guitarist. Originally from Kansas City, Embrey has traveled the globe for years with groups like the Sergio Mendes Band and most recently with the Karrin Allyson team. During his Los Angeles years, Embrey played with such greats as Shelly Manne, Bob Brookmeyer, Alan Broadbent and Gary Foster.
After returning to Kansas City in 1989, Embrey worked the local scene with Sons of Brasil, Interstring and Allyson. Embrey and Allyson co-produced her first and third albums, and he has performed on eight of Allyson’s nine albums for Concord.
The fall Jazz Series continues at noon in the Recital Hall on the following dates:

• Oct. 24 The Hot Club of K.C.

The 50-minute concerts feature Kansas City jazz artists. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The concerts are cosponsored by the JCCC humanities and music departments, Community Services and the Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 34-627.
