Suggested Assignment Guidelines

An appropriate assignment (e.g., essay, research paper, report, journal, portfolio) would allow students to demonstrate content knowledge and critical thinking skills by asking them to demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • fundamental knowledge of world geography;
  • knowledge of the major cultural issues of one’s own and other cultures;
  • knowledge of major historical events affecting one’s own and other cultures;
  • familiarity with contemporary global issues; and
  • an understanding of major ethical concerns.

Student work best suited for evaluation would require synthesis or evaluation of subject matter and provide opportunities for students to compare and contrast, analyze relationships, evaluate strength and weaknesses of arguments, and describe implications. Essay and report assignments often provide the best measure for the culture and ethics criteria. However, short answer and multiple-choice test questions are acceptable if they address one or more of the above goals.
