GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Prerequisites:

Two college-credit courses in American Sign Language (ASL) are required. Johnson County Community College offers Elementary ASL I (INTR 120) and Elementary ASL II (INTR 121) that will satisfy this requirement. These courses must be passed with a grade of "C" or higher in order to be considered for admission to the Interpreter Training Program (ITP).

Note: If you have ASL courses from another college or conversational fluency from a source other than college coursework, please contact Darryl Luton (dluton@jccc.edu) and/or Ronald Symansky (rsymansk@jccc.edu) to schedule an ASL Proficiency Interview.

One college-credit course in English Composition I (ENGL 121) is required. This course must be passed with a grade of "B" or higher in order to be considered for admission into the ITP. English proficiency is a critical prerequisite skill to the skill of interpreting.

Conditional acceptance may be granted to those students who have not completed all pre-requisites prior to the application deadline.  However, all prerequisites to admission must be successfully completed (with the required minimum grades) prior to the first semester of courses.

Enrollment in Program:

The courses must be taken sequentially as outlined in the Associate of Applied Science Degree Requirements (page 9). If students drop any interpreter training course without prior approval from the program facilitator, they will be dropped from the program and will need to reapply to the Interpreter Training Program in order to re-enroll in Interpreter Training courses.

Grades in the Program:

All students are expected to earn a grade of "C" or higher in all courses in order to continue. Students not earning at least a grade of "C" in both the Interpreter Training Program and general education requirements will not be allowed to continue in the program.

Grades for Transfer Credits:

Only courses with grades of a “C’ or higher will be accepted as transfer credits to apply toward the A.A.S. in Interpreter Training.

Grade Point Average:

A minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required to be eligible for application to the ITP. If you have not completed at least 12 hours of college credit, your high school GPA will be used.

Language Resource Center:

Lab work is incorporated into many of the skills classes. For this reason, the number of contact hours per week will exceed the number of credit hours in some classes. These additional hours help ensure that students have sufficient practice time and opportunities to work individually, with another student, or in small groups. Students will view videotapes and use audiotapes for additional practice. The Language Resource Center (LRC) is located in LIB 225 and is open throughout the week for student use. Students will also be expected to meet with Deaf people in the community, attend Deaf functions, and participate in a planned "silent weekend" to experience a mini language and cultural immersion.

Capstone Evaluation and Graduation:

A comprehensive evaluation and portfolio will measure the skills of ITP students.  This evaluation is attached to INTR 282 Interpreting Practicum II. Students will be required to pass this comprehensive exam with a total score of 78% or higher and pass Practicum II with a grade of “C” or higher in order to graduate from the program.

Information Session:

Two information sessions will be held to acquaint prospective students with the JCCC Interpreter Training Program and the field of interpreting in general. All students considering application to the program are encouraged to attend. The sessions are:

Thursday October 18, 2007 5-6pm in CC 107    AND   Thursday, February 7, 2008, 5 – 6pm in CC 107

Application packets are available from the Student Success Center, 2nd floor of the Student Center, and the ITP Office (GEB 261).
