STEPS TO ADMISSION

If the admission file is complete by February 15, 2008:

1.       Applicant will be notified that file is complete (complete means all transcripts and ACT results are received, and all application materials are completed).

2.       Applicant will be contacted to schedule an interview (usually sometime in March). Interviews are meant to assess such skills as fluency in English and ASL, basic cognitive processing skills, interpersonal skills, maturity, professional behavior, and basic awareness of interpreting and critical thinking. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their ASL competency (both comprehension and production) during the interview.

3.       Sometime after the interview (usually mid to late May), applicants will be notified by certified mail whether they have been accepted into the ITP.

Note: Should more than 30 applicants qualify; a waiting list will be formed.

Final selections will be based upon a competitive process which ranks the applicants interviewed and reflects the consensus of the interview committee.
STEPS TO ACCEPT/DECLINE POSITION
All applicants offered a position in the Interpreter Training Program will be notified by certified mail. To acknowledge acceptance/decline of position the applicant must:

1.       Return the Intention to Accept/Decline form (mailed with the acceptance letter), along with a $125.00 tuition deposit, within 10 days from the receipt of the acceptance letter. The $125.00 will be applied to the first semester's tuition. This deposit will be refunded only if written notification is submitted to Admissions prior to June 7, 2008. The form is to be returned even if the applicant has decided to decline the position. This permits the next person on the waiting list to be moved into the vacated slot in a timely manner.

2.       Have his/her hearing evaluated by a licensed audiologist. The audiologist must complete the JCCC audiogram form, which will also be mailed with the acceptance letter. This form must be returned to the Admissions Office within four weeks. Students will not be allowed to enroll until an audiogram is received. If this deadline is not met or if the audiogram is not approved, the student may be subject to non-acceptance or termination in the program. Hearing evaluations completed on or after February 15, 2006, need not be retaken; however, the completed audiogram form must be in the program and admission file.

Applicants are responsible for having the testing completed and for signing releases so that their audiograms are sent from the audiologist to JCCC. Some possible choices are: Associated Audiologists, (913) 829-0891; Hearing Associates, (913) 384-5880; or KUMC, Hearing and Speech Dept., (913) 588-5730. Note: Prices may vary. Discounts may be available if you mention this is a requirement for the JCCC Interpreter Training Program.

With or without amplification, the applicant must have sufficient hearing to function as an interpreter. Specifically, the audiogram must show pure time threshold in at least one ear of 25 dB or below in the speech range of 500, 1000, and 2000 HZ. Your diagnostic hearing evaluation must include pure tone air conduction, speech reception threshold, and speech discrimination ability.
