Cavaliers season comes to an end

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College men's soccer team saw its season come to a disappointing end Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the 2008 NJCAA Region VI playoffs. JCCC, the No. 3 seed in the region standings, lost to sixth seeded Allen County, 3-2, in front of a home crowd. It was the third straight season the Cavaliers were sent home in the first round of the playoffs.

Allen County took control of the match early, scoring a goal just three minutes in, and added a second just 20 minutes later. The Cavaliers cut into their two-goal deficit when Japail Singh fired a shot past the Devils keeper with just over two minutes remaining in the half.

Oumar Seck, the team's leading scorer in 2008, knotted the game at 2-2 just a 1:32 into the second half, and it appeared the momentum had swung the Cavaliers way. Both team's held each other in check until Allen County forward Lehi Ortega fired an unassisted goal, his second of the match, past JCCC goalie Sean Craddick, giving Allen County its final margin of victory.

While the ending to the season wasn't what head coach Fatai Ayoade had envisioned, his team did have its best campaign since the 2005 season when he guided the Cavaliers to a region title. JCCC finished 2008 with a 12-7-1 record.
