Cavaliers offense comes alive against Cowley
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Nine different Johnson County Community College men's soccer players either scored or assisted on a goal in a 10-3 defeat over Cowley College, Wednesday afternoon, at the JCCC soccer field. The Cavaliers reached double figures for goals scored in a match for the first time since since downing Cloud County 11-3 in 2006, a span of 39 matches. The win upped JCCC's season mark to 10-5-1.
JCCC sophomore Chris Tunnison started the Cavaliers scoring just four minutes into the match, netting his first collegiate goal. Tunnison had five assists as a freshman, and this year has two assists.
The Cavaliers quickly added two more goals from Alex Rathbun and Michael Shadfar over the next eight minutes, and appeared to be in control with a 3-0 lead. However, Cowley's Cornelius Keegan got the Tigers on the board with a goal at the 13:50 mark of the first half. JCCC increased its lead to three goals again late in the first half, after Cortland Gibson scored from about 25 yards out off a free kick.
Cowley came out in the second half aggressively, and scored two goals in the first 12 minutes, to cut JCCC's lead to just one, 4-3. One of those scoring strikes was off the foot of Cornelius. After that, it was all Johnson County, as the Cavaliers reeled off six straight goals over the final 28 minutes.
Rathbun, Oumar Seck and Shadfar were the offensive stars for JCCC. Rathbun scored twice and had three assists. Seck scored twice, and added two assists, and Shadfar had two goals and one assist.
