JCCC Golf Team Wins Conference Title
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College golf team recently won the final Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference golf tournament at Dub’s Dread Golf Course, securing the overall conference championship for the Cavaliers. The conference title is the second for JCCC and head coach Lafayette Norwood. In addition, five members of the team earned all-conference accolades, the second highest total in team history.
JCCC finished the season with four tournament wins, and compiled 26 total points, seven more than runner-up Hutchinson. Sophomores Tyler Goecker (Lee’s Summit North) and Jay Kramer (S.M. West) finished third and fourth in the overall point standings with 24.5 and 23.5 points respectively on the season. Goecker’s total is the eight-best in team history, Kramer ranks ninth all-time.
Second-team honors went to sophomores Eric Byers (Humbolt, Kan.) and Tommy Clifford (St. Thomas Aquinas). Byers tied for eighth with 17 points, Clifford accumulated 16 points, good for a tie for 10th in the conference. Freshman Aaron Odom (Raytown, Mo.) finished in the 14th spot in the points standings with 13 points.
In the final tournament, JCCC fired a team total of 927 in the 54-hole championship event, four shots ahead of Dodge City. Pratt finished third (936), followed by Hutchinson (940) and Kansas City Kansas (954).
Goecker finished in the three-way tie for first with a score of 229. He opened play with a 74 and followed with rounds of 74 and 81. It was Goecker’s first win of his collegiate career. Clifford and Byers also finished in the top 10. Clifford placed fifth with a 231 (80-76-75) and Byers finished eighth with a 233 (78-78-77). He was the only JCCC player to shoot in the 70s all three rounds. Kramer just missed a top-10 finish, finishing in a tie for 11th with a score of 236 (82-73-81). His 73 was the second lowest round in the entire field for the tournament.
