JCCC 13th at NJCAA golf championship
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College golf team registered a 13th-place finish at the NJCAA Golf Championship at the Links of Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, N.M. last week. The team’s 13th-place finish ties the third-best effort in team history. JCCC finished the 72-hole championship with a team score of 1155, the best team stroke total in Cavaliers’ history. They beat the old mark set two years ago at Mariah Hills in Dodge City by 34 strokes. The team also recorded team round scores of 282, 284 and 288 which rank 1st, second and tied for third in team history.
In addition to the team records set at the championship, several individual performances now are on top the charts in JCCC history. Freshman Matt Salome of Wichita, Kan, posted a team record total of 279, nine strokes under par. That total is 15 shots better than the previous best effort set by Jay Kramer at last year’s tournament. Salome opened play with 68, the second lowest score recorded in a national tournament by a JCCC golfer. He followed with rounds of 70, 71 and 70. That performance earned him a tie for 20th overall. Only two players in JCCC’s history have posted a higher finishes at nationals.
Freshmen Andrew Manley of Salina, Kan., opened the tournament with a round of 67, the best round posted by a JCCC golfer in a national tournament. It ranks as the second lowest shot at any tournament in team history. Manley backed his record-setting effort with a 69 in the second round, becoming the first player in team history to post two rounds in the 60s in a national championship. He finished the tournament with rounds of 74 and 73 to finish with a 72-hole total of 283, five strokes under par, good for a tie for 30th. His 283 total and 30th place finish rank second and tied for seventh respectively in team history.
Rounding out the team were sophomore Aaron Odom (300 - T-80th), freshman Joey Krsnich (300 - T-80th) and freshman Mike Kuchinski (306 - 94th).
