JCCC golf team places 12th at nationals
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College golf team posted a 12th-place finish at the 2007 NJCAA Golf Championship at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. last week. The Cavaliers finished with a team total score of 1191, the third-best total posted by a JCCC team in a national tournament.
Individually, the Cavaliers were led by sophomore Matt Salome, who finished tied for 22nd with a 72-hole total of 290, six-over par. That ranks as the third-best score posted by a Cavalier in a national championship. Salome set JCCC’s national championship scoring record last year with a nine-under par 279. His 22nd-place finish is the fourth-best effort posted by a Cavalier. Salome fired an even par 71 in both the first and second round, and finished with rounds of 75 and 73. On the season, Salome finished with a stroke average of 74.0 with 30 rounds of golf played. That stroke average set a new season mark at JCCC, breaking the old record of 75.4. He also set a new career mark with a stroke average of 75.1 with 60 rounds played. The previous mark was 76.0. Additionally, his 60 rounds played are a record.
Sophomore Andrew Manley and freshman Nate Sargent posted 14-over 298 scores for the tournament, placing them in a tie for 46th. Their 298 total ranks as the seventh-best score posted at nationals. Manley fired rounds of 74, 72, 77 and 75, and finished the season with a stroke average of 75.4, which ties the old record. For his career, Manley posted a stroke average of 76.2, third-best all-time. Sargent shot 74, 71, 79 and 74, and capped the season with a stroke average of 76.8.
Freshman Keith Erickson finished tied for 63rd with a 305 total for the championship. His effort in the final round was key to helping JCCC tie for 12th overall. After three rounds, Erickson was tied for 82nd, but his final round 72 jumped him up 19 spots on the field. He had rounds of 80, 77 and 76 prior to his final round 72. His 305 total ties for 15th on JCCC’s championship chart. Erickson finished his freshman year with a stroke average of 76.5.
