JCCC golf team places 14th at nationals

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College golf team posted a 14th-place finish at the 2008 NJCAA Golf Championship at Hampton Cover River Course in Huntsville, Ala., last week. The Cavaliers finished with a team total score of 1255, the 10th-best total posted by a JCCC team in a national tournament.

Individually, the Cavaliers were led by sophomore Keith Erickson, who finished tied for 27th with a 72-hole total of 304, sixteen over par. That ranks tied for the 14th-best score posted by a Cavalier in a national championship.  His 27th-place finish is the sixth-best effort posted by a Cavalier. Erickson opened with an 82, but fought back with rounds of 72, 77 and 73.  On the season, Erickson finished with a stroke average of 76.7 with 27 rounds of golf played. That stroke average ranks tied for 14th at JCCC. He also ranks fifth all-time with a career stroke average of 76.6 with 55 rounds played.

Freshman Miles Christensen finished in a tie for 48th with a final total of 312. He posted rounds of 79, 82, 76 and 75. His 312 total ties for 30th all-time at JCCC.  Christensen finished his rookie campaign with a stroke average of 77.2. That ranks 22nd for a season in JCCC history.

Sophomore Mike Elafros, the Jayhawk Conference individual medalist for 2007-08, finished in a tie for 64th with a 316 total. Elafros had rounds of 81, 79, 81 and 75. He finished the season with the team’s top stroke average of 75.9, which ranks him seventh all-time. He also finished his career with a stroke average of 76.9, sixth-best in team history.
