JCCC fall teams begin play this weekend
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College volleyball team, women’s soccer team and men’s soccer team, open their 2008 season this weekend, all on campus.
The volleyball team is ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA Coaches Poll and under the direction of first-year head coach Jennifer Ei, will be tested right away, playing four matches this weekend, all against ranked opponents. JCCC opens its season Friday, against No. 25 Longview Community College at 3 p.m., and follow with a match against No. 2 ranked Cowley College at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Cavaliers host No. 4 ranked Des Moines Area Community College and No. 5 Parkland College and 10 am., and 12 p.m. respectively. Last year, the volleyball team had a record of 28-5, and finished runner-up at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.
The women’s soccer team, led by veteran coach Jim Schwab, will host Dodge City Community College in a Jayhawk Conference battle on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m.. Following that match, JCCC will play six of its next seven matches on the road. Last season, the women’s soccer team was ranked most of the season, and finished with a record of 19-3-1.
The men’s soccer team, coached by Fatai Ayoade, looks to improve upon a 6-12-1 2007 campaign. The Cavaliers also open with a Jayhawk Conference battle against Dodge City Community College on Saturday at 3 p.m., following the women’s game. JCCC follows with a home match on Wednesday, Aug. 27 against Maple Woods Community College, then hits the road for four straight matches before returning for home match with Jefferson College on Sept. 18.
