OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association recently induced four new members into its Hall of Fame, and one of those four was Johnson County Community College head coach Jill Stinson.  Joining her were Kathy Feldman of Alfred State University, Brenda Hampton of Iowa Western Community College and Patricia Bernardo of Miami Dade College.  The ceremony took place at the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship banquet, Nov. 19, 2006, in West Plains, Mo.

In 1997, Jill Stinson became the fifth head volleyball coach at Johnson County, replacing Hall of Famer Susan Brown.  Under Stinson’s leadership, JCCC has compiled a 271-115 record over 10 seasons.  In 2005, Stinson led Johnson County to the program’s first-ever national
championship and was named the NJCAA and Tachikara AVCA National Coach of the Year.  Last season, Stinson again led JCCC to the national tournament, her third appearance overall, and the team posted a ninth-place finish.

During her tenure, Stinson has coached 47 all-conference selections, 39 All-Region/District selections and eighth All-America selections.  In addition, 15 of her student-athletes have garnered NCAA Academic All-American honors.

Stinson previously coached at Penn Valley Community College.  During her four-year tenure, she led her team to one runner-up finish in the region and earned the 1987 Region XVI coach-of-the-year award.

Before joining Penn Valley, Stinson served one year as head coach at Benedictine College, leading her team to a 30-20 record.  She also has four years experience at the NCAA Division I level, serving as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas.

Stinson was also an accomplished player.  She was twice honored as a NJCAA All-Region VI performer while attending Cowley College.  She continued her academic and athletic careers at the University of Kansas, where she served as team captain her senior season.  She also has a long history of success playing at various levels within USA Volleyball.

Stinson has also been active in volleyball off the court.  From 1987 to 1995, she served as the director of USA Volleyball Region Junior Olympic Volleyball Program for Kansas and Missouri.  In 1996, USAV honored her with the National Junior Outstanding Service Award.

Inducted as a contributor/coach, Kathy Feldman was hired by Alfred State in 1980 and served 15 years as head volleyball coach, compiling a 279-252 record.  She was selected the Region III coach of the year in 1993.   Her other contributions to the sport of volleyball include:

representing the NJCAA of the NAGWS Volleyball Rules Committee and the USA Volleyball Board of Directors along with a 16-year stint as a volleyball official.  For her service with USA Volleyball, she was presented with the USA Volleyball Outstanding Service Award in 1996.

Brenda Hampton had a very successful career as the Iowa Western volleyball coach before taking over as the college’s athletic director in 2002.  During her 15 season tenure, she compiled a 504-211 record and 14 winning seasons.  Her teams made four trips to the national tournament and she was selected as the District Coach of the Year four times.

Hampton is the holder of the longest home and overall winning streaks in Iowa Western history.  Her 1998 team won 20 straight matches and she did not lose a home match from Oct. 3, 1994 to Sept. 25, 1999, compiling six undefeated home seasons.

Patricia Bernardo is one of the most talented hitters and blockers to ever play at Miami Dade.  During Bernardo’s tenure at Miami Dade, the team compiled a 67-3 record, and she averaged 4.2 kills and 1.6 blocks per game for the Sharks.  As a freshman, Bernardo was a first-team Region VIII and Florida Community College Athletic Association Southern Conference selection.  Miami Dade finished 34-3 that season, winning the FCCAA Tournament and finishing second at the national tournament. She was named to both the state and national all-tournament teams.

As a sophomore, Bernardo led Miami Dade to a perfect 33-0 record and the program’s fifth national title.  She was a first-team All-America selection and named co-MVP of the national tournament.  She again received Region VIII and FCCAA Southern Conference first-team honors, and was named the Player of the Year for both.
