JCCC cross country teams win Tabor Invitational

OVERLAND PARK, KS --  The Johnson County Community College women’s and men’s cross country teams traveled to Hillsboro, Kan.,  last Saturday for the Tabor Invitational, and both teams came away the winner of their respective races.  The Lady Cavaliers, ranked No. 2 nationally, won the seven team competition with 42 points, while the men, ranked sixth nationally, won their six-team race with 28 points.

On the women’s side, three of JCCC’s top five runners placed among the top-10 finishers.  Leading the JCCC women was sophomore Jackie Jamison of Quinter, Kan., who finished fifth with a personal-best time of 19:03.85.  She bettered her previous best mark in the 5k race by 1:14. She also ranks as the No. 1 American runner in the NJCAA.

Also finishing in the top-10 were freshmen Danielle Houltberg and Christa Heideman.  Houltberg finished eighth with a time of 19:33.78, and Heideman was close behind, finishing ninth in 19:36.99.  The pair rank as the NJCAA’s third and fourth best American runners.

Rounding out JCCC’s runners were freshman Sarah Dupree (16th-20:16.25), freshman Samantha Parr 37th-21:48.19), freshman Jessie Davis (38th-21:52.45), freshman Jenna Wagoner (43rd-22:08.84) and freshman Erin Eustice (48th-22:18.56).

The men had five runners place among the top-10, and nine in the top-15 in this race.  Leading the Cavalier men harriers was freshman sensation James Tong of North Kansas City, Mo.  Tong finished second overall with an impressive time of 26:20.97 over the 8k course.   He has two other top-five finishes this season.

Freshman Trevor Johannsen  placed fifth with a time  of 26:42.73, his second top-five finish of the season.  He was followed in the top-15 by freshman Daniel Everhart (7th-27:08.27), freshman Alex Troncoso (9th-27:12.52), freshman Grant Catloth (10th-27:23.57), freshman Keith Cowart (11th-27:39.62), freshman Kyle Morgison (14th-28:31.13) and sophomore David Franz (15th-28:33.55).   Franz’s time was a personal-best by 57 seconds.  

Rounding out JCCC’s competitors were freshman Dan Quillin (19th-28:43.07) and sophomore Jason Sorn (67th-32:15.86).
