JCCC baseball advances in Region VI playoffs
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College baseball team moved a step closer to earning a spot in its first NJCAA World Series by sweeping Pratt Community College in the first round of the Region VI Tournament, Saturday afternoon at JCCC’s baseball stadium. The Cavaliers opened with a 12-6 victory, then secured their spot in the eight-team double elimination tournament at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan., this weekend, with a 14-4 victory.
In the first game, Chris Dobler posted a perfect 5-for-5, including two doubles. He also drove in a team-high three runs. Eddie Torres belted a two-run homer, his first of the season, and Justin Miller ripped a double that scored two runs. Travis Blankenship was a the starter on the hill, but struggled in his 3 1/3 innings of work. Dustin Holthaus came in relief of Blankenship, and pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to improve his season record to 6-2.
In the second game, Nick Giuliani and Reed Kreiser powered the offense. Giuliani was 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, and Kreiser went 2-for-4, with a double and home run and three driven in. Other offensive stars were; Dobler (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Jeremy Francis (2-for-4, RBI and two steals). Kyle Crandall got his seventh win of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He also struck out eight hitters.
